Scope of works:

Smith and Nephew appointed Brand Agency Harkess-Ord to oversee the re-design and interior refurbishment of the UK Head Office Business Centre in Hull. The concept of the project being the new S&N brand originally conceived by Woolf Olins.

Working closely with Harkess Ord, Insight developed the design concepts, prepared specifications and subsequently took on full responsibility for the design, project management and build programme, which included a new reception, conference suite, wc’s, training facility, offices, break-out, touchdown areas and a coffee bar.

The new design brought together three separate office areas into one cohesive environment.  New structural steel elements were introduced to open up small dark areas into large open spaces. The conference suite featured state-of-the-art audio visual equipment and lighting, co-ordinated to work with the sliding folding walls. Floating plasterboard islands below the ceiling hosted an array of programmable and dimmable direct/indirect lights activated via a network of PIR sensors. The use of fluorescent and halogen lamps created lighting levels to suit all office functions.

Extensive mechanical works were carried out above the ceiling and a new VRV air conditioning system installed to provide heating and cooling to the entire space. Ceiling mounted plasma screens ‘floated’ throughout the break-out areas and bespoke touchdown stations were designed and installed for internet browsing.
